A Day at the Beach

Ista Weyr - Southern Bowl
Compared to that of other weyrs, Ista's bowl is small, and incomplete - northwards, one wall was blown clear away several millenia ago, leaving the view clear towards the plateau, the jungles, and the ocean beyond that. Somewhat elliptical, the breadth of the bowl seems to run Northwest to Southeast, the bustling epicentre of the weyr being here, towards the southwest. Several large entrances have been dug into the great bowl walls here - north east are the hatching grounds, south the Living Caverns, these being the two largest caverns in the weyr.
To the east, a small entrance leads in to the ground weyrs - the ledges of these line the bowl wall above, often filled with dragons of gold or bronze; westwards is another ledge, but with a staircase built into the wall, allowing access to the Sable Sands. The infirmary is located towards the southwest.

Morning finds the southern bowl of the weyr bustling with people as weyrfolk and riders alike head to and from the living caverns for the morning meal. Zorya happens to be one of those leaving the cavern, relatively slow steps lead the girl into the bowl and the sun that holds for now though in the distance rain threatens.

Zipalla walks out of the caverns slowly, her mind apparently lost somewhere as she absently weaves through those still heading in to eat. Her hands are dug into the pockets of her skirt and and she looks at the ground, boots tapping softly beneath her steps.

Zorya is doing just about the same, so surprise of surprises when the girl, who wasn't at breakfast and is still leaving the caverns, runs into her cousin following a similar path through people. "Oup, sorry," she apologizes, turning to give the girl an apologetic smile, "Oh, hey Zipalla."

Zipalla halts suddenly at the bump and blushes furiously, "So sorry!" she chirps, then blinks and giggles a bit. "Oh..hello Zorya.. how are you today?" she asks, smiling at her cousin.

Zorya giggles a well. "I'm good, how about you?" Funny how they sleep in the same place and seem to miss each other there so often. "Was just thinking of taking a walk down by the beach." she adds noting her rather usual morning activity, the way in which its said an invitation for the other girl to join her.

Zipalla nods her head, "I'm good..ooh.. swimming? Or just walking..either..I'll come?" she says, asking sort of, though the way she curls her arm through Zorya's it seems she's rather intent upon going with her.

"Just a walk." Zorya replies as the younger girl links arms with her. "I like it in the morning when its quiet. Specially when there's a breeze."

"Alright..yeah it's nice in the mornings..talked to Zh'ae lately?" she asks as falls in step with the older girl.

Zorya blinks at the other girl before turning back to watch her steps as they head towards the beach. "Not recently." she replies with a shake of her head, hopefully her long blonde hair will hide the blush she's sure is visible on her cheeks from her cousin's angle.

Ista Weyr - Main Beach
The famous black sands of Ista spread out about the great cove upon which the weyr has been built, gleaming under the rays of both sun and moon, like diamonds in their own pristine beauty. Caught between the brilliance of the deep, verdant greens of the forest, and the crystalline blues of the shallows, gradually deepening their colour deeper into the great ocean, the beach is no less striking, truly beautiful in its own way.
The hot, heavy rays of the sun reach deep into these sands, forever blazing underfoot, although the water remains cool and refreshing even upon the hottest of days, never quite reaching the point of being tepid. Off to one side, coming from the plateau, a small, thin waterfall, empties into a catching pool that runs off into the water through dark sand and pebbles.

Zipalla grins in that wicked-teasing-cousin way then nods her head, "Okay.." then when her feet hit the sand she stops to strip. Boots, skirt, vest, shirt all laid aside, "I was going to swim so.." and she gestures to her halter top and little boycut bottoms. "This will get some good sun on me.. I'm much too pale."

Zorya laughs, her blush subsiding as the conversation moves on. "Well don't let me stand in your way." she replies, gesturing towards the water. "And you're not that pale." she adds with a roll her eyes.

A shake of her head, "I'm content to walk with you, how are you feeling? Feeling settled down any now? Or.. just more questions?" she asks, a genuine look of concern and intrest making her hazel eyes seem intense as she looks to her cousin.

Zorya nods, steps slowly meandering along the water's edge, just out of reach of the lapping waves. "Settling in fine, just took a lot of getting used to." she explains.

Zipalla turns a sweet smile to Zorya and nods, "If you don't want to be a rider, don't.. you dance really pretty.. probably sing pretty too.. I don't know how to do any of those pretty things.." She steps into the waters edge and pushes her toes into the sand then steps out to just over her ankles and swishes along beside Zorya.

Zorya giggles, "We'll see what happens I guess." she agrees. "I might stand yet, you just seem more the type than me." she pauses, glancing over to the girl beside her once again. "What do you mean?"

Zipalla nods her head and smiles softly, "I'm more the type.. I was thinking.. you know it's the same here how we all get to thinking things are a certain way.. but they don't have to be. And I mean.. I don't know how to be pretty and graceful.." She smiles and looks out over the water some.

Zorya blinks. "You don't know how?" she asks a bit skeptical. "Its not hard or anything…" But then some people are better at it than others and she happens to be one of them. For her it's just natural. "I think you're plenty pretty."

"I'll leave the dancing to you.." she says softly then smiles, "Really? I don't think so.. we have awful noses.. and I'm "too young".. and.. besides, I think I'll just stay away from boys.. not because Ton says so but because it's just not worth the hassle."

Zorya awws, reaching a hand out to pat the girl's shoulder. "Well it looks better on you than Uncle L'ton." she teases. "Its really not that bad, Zipalla." Then again most of the family has it and she's used to it. That and she got lucky and got her father's nose… "And you have plenty of time to be grown up. At least you don't have to worry about him marrying ya off next turn." They've both had things to deal with, they just happen to be different things.

Zipalla smirks, "I don't think Ton has any troubles with his nose.." she says in THAT tone. "I know I know..all the time in Pern, K'ael says much the same thing. And no, I'm not getting married ever," she says with a firm nod.

Zorya laughs. "Well then I don't know what your worried about." she teases, sending the girl a smile. The said she's quiet but for humming to herself as they continue down the beach, content with just being there.

Zipalla grins then huffs a little, "Just because I dont want to get married doesn't mean I want to be ugly.." and she narrows her eyes at Zorya. "S'alright, I don't expect you to understand really.. just be prepared to share is all I have to say."

Zorya blinks, turning her gaze back to the other girl. "Zipalla, I didn't mean it like that." she quickly replies, "You aren't by any means ugly." How dare she say such a thing! The look on her face that of confusion as her cousin goes on, "What are you talking about?" Yep, she's lost her now.

"Share..if you get married..well you might not have to if you don't marry a rider but then if you ride too I guess it all evens out.." she muses aloud then taps her chin, thinking, doesn't everyone know this?

That doesn't seem to help. "Who said anything about getting married?" Zorya starts, sure they had mentioned it but that was just a passing comment and they were beyond it. Right? "Share?" Poor girl. "I didn't grow up here Zipalla, remember…" Hint hint.

"Well..oh.." and she lifts her shoulders. "When dragons mate..so do their riders," she says matter-of-factly, waiting for Zorya to do the math. "Doesn't matter if you have a mate or not.. it's..hmmm…to borrow a phrase.."How it is".. and she smiles. "And even the riders of the dragons who lose sometimes drag girls off.. cause they still want to, even if the female dragon chooses someone else."

Zorya ohs. "Right… Dryssa did mention that." Started to anyway. "I just.. forgot. Its not like its somethin Ah even knew bout before." she's allowed to forget things that are mentioned in passing like that. Especially when they aren't exactly clear to her. "I guess that makes sense…"

She nods and shrugs, "Hence..sharing." She turns and then walks a bit further, kicking at the water some as she moves. "So, I'm just going to lock myself in my weyr when the time comes," another firm nod, such plans for such a young one.

"Well I can't say I blame you at all." Zorya agrees, moving on again as her cousin does so. "At least you have a plan for it." There's certainly worse plans the girl could be making. Humming she pauses, "I could teach you…" she offers, looking over to the younger girl, "I mean I don't really know even, but I could try…"

Zipalla smiles a little and nods, "I guess yeah.." then she blinks, "Teach me.." she says, tilting her head then she laughs. "OH! Dancing, right..well.. I don't think I'd be good at that.."

Zorya blinks. What else would she have meant? "Well if you don't want… That's alright. I mean I don't even know what I'm doing." she notes, sending a smile in the girl's direction.

"It's your natural talent, Zorya, you didn't have to be taught it, that's part of why it's so pretty..it's just you." Zipalla smiles and looks down at her hands then out to the water, "Riding is the only thing I know I'm meant to do..that and maybe take care of horses and other beasts.."

Zorya doesn't really know what to say to that, and so she simply doesn't say anything at first. "You're good at it…" she comments, "I mean remember when K'ael gave us a ride? I mean I was…" they both know how she was, "But you, you were having so much fun."

Zipalla nods and her face lights up some, "It was wonderful..I've also been around them since I was three..you did fine considering how inexperienced you are.. it'll get better."

Zorya laughs. "I thought I was going to be sick." she confesses. And how utterly embarrassing would that have been! "I hope you're right though. But from the look on your face you know exactly how I feel when I dance." the girl adds, taking a few steps and turning completely around on her toes once leaving a divot in the sand as she moves forward again.

Zipalla grins and shakes her head then she watches Zorya, "Yeah I guess so..cause you got that look.." she says with a grin. "Sing me something?" she asks, raising a brow.

Zorya blinks, the look she sends the girl questioning. "I…" That was exceedingly unexpected. "I supposed I could try." she agrees after a long pause.

Zipalla beams and then steps out of the water toward a dry spot, slipping down to sit, legs crossed, "You can dance too if you want but I'd LOVE to hear you sing, I don't sing.." and she shakes her head.

"I don't know many…" Zorya admits. "And not very well…" She thinks for a moment, biting her lip and glancing towards the sky to think of just what to sing.

Zipalla nods and smiles, "You'll do fine..just a little bit of something..so I can hear your voice.." and she leans back on her hands, gazing skyward to let the sun warm her from head to toe.

Zorya wets her lips taking a breath. She hasn't before for anyone who asked. But it's just Zipalla, it'll be fine. The girl opens her mouth, lift her voice to match the tune in her head. "Harper, tell me of the road" she begin, the melody ringing quietly, "That leads beyond this Hold," closing her eyes as she falls a bit more comfortable, "That wends its way beyond the hill…
Does it go further on until
It ends in sunset's gold?"
The last silvery notes hang in the air for moment before the breeze off the water carries them away leaving the girl to bit her lip.

Zipalla watches entranced as her cousin sings. She smiles widely and nods her head, almost unable to wait til she stops before she starts to clap. Her hands work quickly and she giggles, "Oh Zorya! That was beautiful! Did you write it?"

Zorya shakes her head, "It wasn't that good." she starts, overly embarrassed by the other girl's praise. "I don't even know all the words." the girl tries to explain, sinking to sit on the sandy beach opposite her cousin. "I just heard it once." And she liked it, so it was remembered.

"It was too.." and she grins, watching Zorya fidget and stammer. "Oh I see.." she says as the girl sits beside her. She sits up a little and hugs her gently, "I think it was lovely..and we all know that I'm right."

Zorya has to laugh at that and she giggles a bit, returning the gesture before leaning back. "I guess you are." she replies a hint of teasing her her voice. "Because Zipalla's always right about everything."

Zipalla flumps back in the sand to lie down, "Oh how I wish I was that smart.." she says playfully. "Then I'd know all I need to know..and could probably even see the future."

Zorya laughs, "But what would be the fun in knowing all you need to know?" she asks, her tone matching her cousin's playfulness. "If that was the case then we wouldn't have any reason to sit on the beach and have our talks."

Zipalla laughs then stops and squints at Zorya, "Oh quit being logical..we'd still need talks but I'd have all the answers.." she says with a playful pinch to the girl's side. "I'd always enjoy talks on the beach.. so peaceful out here."

"Yeah," Zorya agrees, even as she takes a deep breath of the fresh sea air and lets it out slowly. "But still, I wouldn't enjoy them near as much if you knew all the answers already." she says, going back to the first part of the conversation as she leans back to stretch out on the sand..

"I guess that would be kinda boring.." she agrees then turns her head as Zorya lays back too, "I think I'd live out here if I could.." she says with a giggle.

"As long as it doesn't rain," Zorya comments, sending a glance to the distant clouds. "Probably could for a day at least. I wouldn't think anyone'd mind. Wouldn't be building houses you know." she giggles back.

"Party pooper.." Zipalla scolds then nods, "I guess not..a hut! I'd have a hut! A really big one..for me and my dragon."

Zorya laughs even more. "You're hopeless Zipalla." she sighs, turning her head to give the girl a grin. "You and your dragon living on the beach. Wouldn't that be something."

Zipalla giggles wholeheartedly now and lays her arms over her belly, "Well you know I'm bound to be different," she says between little chirps.

"This is true." Zorya agrees. "I wouldn't have it any other way." she notes, stretching her arms above her for a moment before tucking her hands behind her head.

"I'm glad.." she says then looks over…oh dear… exposed ribs..look away! She bites at her lip then one hand darts to said ribs and tickles a bit before curling back, preparing to defend herself.

Zorya squeals playfully, her hands quickly pulling from behind her head to allow arms and elbows to protect her as she curls up against the onslaught. "Zipalla!" she whines, giggling at the same time.

The younger girl giggles wildly and attacks once more, the older cousin having not returned fire. "Ok ok.." she says as she finally relents, sitting up some, onto her elbows. "I stayed at K'ael's last night," she says with a grin cut to Zorya.

Zorya giggles, squirming. "Oh, stop it! Zip!" she giggles until the younger cousin finally gives in and leaves her still trying to stop laughing. "Oh?" she questions, raising a brow as she turns to look at the girl again. "I was wondering where you were last night…"

Zipalla grins and nods, "Yes..if I'm ever not in the dorm that's where I am.. I like staying with him and Azaeth. Kinda spoils me to having my own place though."

Zorya laughs, "I guess it could. Just leaves more room for me." she teases with a shrug. "And poor K'ael sleeping on the couch all the time…" she adds working on straightening her skirt after ticking. "Though there are times I miss having you around at night."

Zipalla grins and nudges her then nods, though she gets a sort of sheepish look, she makes no comment. "Aww..I miss you too.. it's not all the time though.." she says with a smile.

"Of course not all the time." Zorya replies, pushing herself up so that's she's sitting rather than lying down. "I don't miss you all the time either." she grins over at the girl, "But there are times."

Zipalla feigns a pout, "Not all the time?!" she yelps then folds her arms, "Why I never!" and she looks away, a moment, then looks back, grinning.

Zorya laughs at the girl's reaction. "Well I could just not miss you at all and be happy that when you weren't there I have the space to myself." she grins back.

She wriggles her fingerst threateningly at that then laughs. "I wouldn't blame you, I can be a pain in the tush..especially.."at this age" she says with a grin.

Zorya shakes her head, "Nah, ya don't bother me." she assures, pulling her feet in so that she's sitting crosslegged, feet hidden beneath her legs. "Only when you're talkin bou not having boys chasin ya." she grins. Well then again, she is only barely a turn older than the other girl. They still have alot in common.

Zipalla grins and leans over to nudge Zorya, "Thanks..err…why does that bother you?" she asks, turning a curious gaze to her cousin. "You think I'm weird huh.."

Zorya shakes her head, nudging the girl back. "Only because you complain about it and then you turn around sayin ya don't care and next thing boys come up your complain again." she explains, smiling the whole time. "Your not wierd, and ya don't bother me."

Zipalla blushes at that. A true, embarassed blush. "I guess it's just confusing and I think I have the answer so I say it..then I'm not sure but I'll try not to ah.. well.. you're right.. I should stop doin that." She smiles and looks out to the water, tracing a fingertip along the sand in whirling designs.

Zorya laughs just a bit as her cousin babbles. "Its alright." she assures, reaching over to give the girl's shoulder a pat. "Boys are confusing. I don't understand them either."

Zipalla only blushes a deeper shade then giggles and nods, "Ah well.. so! Have you thought about the Harpers then?" she asks, turning an inquisitive look to Zorya.

Zorya blinks as the question seems to come out of nowhere. "… A little." she finally replies, giving the girl a look of confusion as to how the topic came up again. "Why?"

Ah a young teenage mind. The progression in topic makes perfect sense to Zipalla. She worries about every little thing, her cousin included. "I just wondered..it's far from here I think… I just got you.." she says, as if speaking of a gift. "But if it makes you happy.. we'll help you."

Of course it makes sense to the person saying it. That's why they do. "It is…" Zorya half questions, half agrees with the statement of distance. "Why would I leave you? You may have just gotten me, but I just got you too."

Zipalla grins at her and leans over to hug her, "Yeah you did.. I'm so glad you moved here," she says with a sweet smile to the older girl. "I miss Sris.. I don't know Mai that well and certainly not Niah.. I really needed you."

Zorya nods, hugging the younger girl in return. "I guess we needed each other." she agrees, leaning her head over to rest it on Zipalla's shoulder. "Sris? She's the one that came before Mai?" she guesses, not having heard much more than a passing comment about either. "I haven't met either of them… Niah a little…"

Zipalla nods and gets a sort of sad look on her face, "She's the closest to a mother I ever had.. she left.. then Mai came..she's nice.. and now there's Niah.. but she's not a mate, a mistress I guess.. well one of..many. She's.. like a little shard of ice threatening to melt all the time.. or break into a million pieces.. not sure why, has to be a reason…but anyway.. can't really talk to her."

Zorya nods, "Yeah, I talked to her for a little while once. She's just shy is all." the older girl explains, head still on her cousin's shoulder and an arm still wrapped around the younger girl's back. "Said somethin bout her mother gettin mad at her for being shy when she was little. She's just gotta get used to people I think. Maybe you should try talkin to 'er or somethin."

Zipalla snugs her cousin and nods, "Oh..well when I've tried she's always backed away or had to leave but sure..I can try again I guess.." she nods, being more compliant than excited about it.

"I think she'd be nice if she wasn't so worried about people all the time." Zorya notes, "Doesn't like people touchin her. Won't hurt to try again though." she agrees, pulling herself back to sit up straight again.

Zipalla nods as she listens, "Right.. well.. I never see her so.. it's sorta a moot point.." and she laughs softly. She stretches and her eyes lid in a sort of weary fashion for a moment, "I think I need a nap.."

Zorya nods. "Well I'll catch up with you later then?" she offers. There are other things she should get to for now anyhow.
